DIAMOND STEELTM is a blend of sized inert carbon particles. Each particle is held together
by a system of covalent, carbon-carbon bonds. Essentially, each particle is a system of
large arrays of aromatic rings, fused together at carbon apices, with only a limited
number of heteroatoms located primarily at crystal edge sites. Although these particles
can form a thin film by the cleavage of adjacent carbon "sheets," breakage across a
sheet requires very high energy. As a result, these particles have no known solvent
under normal conditions.
There are no organic oils, ketones, ethers, etc., which are
known to attack them. Therefore, DIAMOND STEELTM (Fine) is an excellent additive for synthetic
oil fluids. The particles do not swell, or react with clay formations. Accordingly, back
flushing of oil and/or gas from producing reservoirs appears to remove the particles and
reservoir impairment does not appear to be a problem. However, the particles do have a
certain amount of flex which helps to prevent reduction in particle size distribution
during drilling operations.
Through our research and development we have found the key to the success of a loss
circulation material is the particle size distribution. The absence of a proper
distribution will result in failure in severe conditions. The differences in particle
size cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is determined by careful screening and then
blended according to percentages determined by exhaustive testing DIAMOND STEELTM is a
superior loss circulation material when compared to like additives due to its composition
and particle size distribution.
Primary Applications
DIAMOND STEELTM can be added to the active mud system and allowed
to circulate while drilling, but the ideal application is to add from 10 to 20 pounds per
barrel in sweeps.
It performs in oil or water base drilling fluids.
Laboratory tests with synthetic oil fluid using a 190-micron disk
reveal almost total sealing while testing at 2500 psi and 250 degrees F. This is a very
severe test and very few products are able to seal with any efficiency. The base mud fails
immediately with no control.
Physical Properties
Appearance: Black granule with silver luster
Specific gravity: 2.22-2.25
Dispersible (not soluble): Water & Oil
Packaging/Handling
DIAMOND STEELTM is completely environmental safe. It can be land farmed, dumped overboard or spilled with no harmful effects.
It is packaged in multi walled paper bags at 50 pounds each.
Please read the MSDS before handling this product.
DIAMOND STEELTM has definite advantages over conventional
fiber applications when trying to seal fractures. Particle size distribution and amount
of bridging agent are the two most important factors. By its make up, higher concentration
of DIAMOND STEELTM can be used with much less effect on mud properties.
“DIAMOND SQUEEZE"TM is a whitish product with various LCM products which when squeezed will turn into a hard mud cake. The product is to be mixed and pumped across the appropriate interval and squeezed into the zone. In this liquid state the DIAMOND SQUEEZETM will migrate into the formation naturally. By applying pressure on the pill it will squeeze further into the formation and turn into a semi solid state. While holding pressure after a designated period of time it will turn into a solid state.
DIAMOND SQUEEZETM can be designed to be acid soluble and is completely environmentally safe. This allows DIAMOND SQUEEZETM to be used while drilling as an LCM and in multiple production zones as a completing aid where each zone can be completed independently without fear of formation damage.
